Let’s be real for a minute: there isn’t anything more satisfying than tacos, chips, salsa, guacamole, and a cold margarita after a long workday. Now that we set that straight, I think you would agree that Mexican food is one of the most popular cuisines around the world, and there is an endless number of authentic options available. If we are being honest, our mouths are already watering. Bet yours is too, isn’t it? In fact, you may already be canceling your dinner plans and preparing a text for your significant other that says, “Honey, we’re getting the best Mexican food tonight!”, or something along those lines. Don’t worry amigo, we’ll have a table waiting for you. To help you kill some time until you can shovel guac and queso into your mouth, we’re going to drop some facts about Mexican food.

Depending on where you live, you’ve probably seen your fair share of taco trucks, burrito bars, and taco joints. But, as you probably know, there is far more to Mexican food than just those options. Mexican food is a cluster of many foods from many different regions. There are many spices, sauces, and combinations of ingredients that result in diverse, yet delicious foods.

Did you know that guacamole translates to ‘testicle sauce’? Here’s a little history lesson for you: before Europeans reached America, the Aztecs made a popular dish known as ahuacamolli — a dish made of mashed avocado, tomatoes, and chilies was said to be Montezuma’s favorite dish. The name ahuacamolli — don’t worry, we’re getting there — derives from two Aztec words: ahuacatl and mole. Ahuacatl was the native word for avocado, which meant testicles. It is believed this description was used because of the shape of the fruit and the way it hangs in pairs from a tree. The Aztecs believed that the avocado was an aphrodisiac and would lavish men with extraordinary sexual mastery… wait a minute, we’re getting off-track. To summarize, Europeans eventually renamed ahuacamolli into guacamole but, technically, the word guacamole means testicle sauce.

We’re not saying eating platters of tacos is the secret to losing weight — or maybe it is the new fad — but Mexican food is often made with ingredients that are healthy for you. Avocados are loaded with fiber and vitamins, beans paired with rice make a satisfying and complete protein, and salsa is made up of vegetables and delicious spices. There are many tacos, burrito bowls, and salads that are full of good-for-you ingredients like veggies and lean proteins. Another plus side is that Mexican food also offers a lot of vegetarian and vegan-friendly options.

Mexican food, while great for lunch, dinner, and a late-night snack, also is a great way to start your morning. Eggs, beans, and rice alone offer protein to keep you going well into the afternoon. At Sandbar Mexican Grill, we have brunch every weekend with a variety of different choices. Try our twist on Mexican-inspired dishes like Huevos Rancheros, Chilaquiles, and Chorizo & Eggs or go for the breakfast burrito or tacos.
